With recent reports that the Buccaneers are already looking toward the 2015 NFL Draft to address and upgrade their quarterback position, the debate has begun as to which quarterback they should want. The top two quarterbacks, Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston, are both extremely talented players, but also very different players.
Every Tuesday on 98.7 The Fan's Fan Interference, Fox Sports' college analyst and NFL Network's NFL Draft analyst joins Justin Pawlowski and Jim Lighthall to discuss college football. As the conversation shifted to the Bucs and which quarterback they should want to select, Davis did not hesitate at all.
"If those two are out there, based on what I've had so far, it's not even a contest for me," Davis said on 98.7 The Fan. "I want Mariota."
Davis would explain that he "violated one of my cardinal rules" last year when evaluating quarterbacks. Davis said he went with Johnny Manziel as his top quarterback in 2014 because he was special, but also noted he wants a quarterback that does all the little things behind the scenes.
"My quarterback needs to be Mr. detail-oriented," Davis said. "My quarterback's gotta be the first one in and the last one out at night. My quarterback's gotta be the guy where, if he does go to the club, he also leaves the club and we don't hear about him the rest of the night."
Charles Davis obviously has some concerns over Jameis Winston off the field. Scouting and research will be at an all-time high for any team looking into Winston's character. On the field, Winston is probably the most talented quarterback and the best leader, but Mariota is very close and has zero issues off the field.
The draft is still close to 6 months away, but the debate is already heating up for the Bucs who are desperate to upgrade that position.
