Peter King: Mariota Perfect Fit with Bucs

Two more games until the Buccaneers find themselves with the 1st overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. With much of the buzz circulating around Oregon's Marcus Mariota, some wonder where his best fit might actually be.

Peter King wrote on his MMQB.com this morning that the Buccaneers might be the best destination for the quiet Mariota.

"My feeling? Mariota’s such a reticent kid about the publicity and the fame that the best thing to happen to him over the weekend might not have been the Heisman. It might have been the Jets’ third win. Now the Jets probably would have to trade a ransom to move up to get him. Mariota would be better off anyway going to a less-intense environment with very good skill players. Coincidentally, Tampa Bay is excellent in those categories … and the Bucs currently hold the first overall pick with two weeks left before the final draft order is released."

"Mariota to Vincent Jackson (though he’ll be 32 next year) and Mike Evans and Austin Seferian-Jenkins. Not a bad group of targets to start with—if the Bucs cooperate, and lose to the Packers and Saints in the last two weeks of the season. That would ensure Tampa Bay having the top pick next spring."

I think it's a little naive to say that Marcus Mariota won't make it in the NFL strictly because of the type of offense he ran in college. Mariota possesses the type of characteristics like size, arm strength, and pocket awareness to be a successful pocket passer. Another attribute that gives Mariota the edge over other failed spread QBs is that he is not a "run-first" quarterback. He uses his speed and his athleticism when he has to.

The Bucs decision on who their next offensive coordinator will be will also have an affect on which quarterback they decide to go with in the draft. Recently, my buddy Joe Bussell (@NFLosophy) threw out the name Bill Lazor as a possible OC for the Bucs if the entire Dolphins coaching staff gets fired this year. I love this idea. Lazor runs an offense with concepts that he picked up under Chip Kelly in Philadelphia. Those concepts might be poerfect for Marcus Mariota. Another name I've thrown out is Bill Musgrave, the Eagles current QB coach. Musgrave has been an offensive coordinator before and is currently learning new concepts under Chip Kelly as well.
