When quarterback Mike Glennon filled in for the injured and struggling Josh McCown, he had a golden opportunity to validate the new regime's claims of being the quarterback of the future. Unfortunately he was unable to live up to it and may find himself wearing a different uniform after this season.
The future of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will not include Glennon. Although he informed reporters on Wednesday the message of being the quarterback of the future has not changed, head coach Lovie Smith sang a different tune during his press conference about his young backup quarterback.
“His future right now is he’s on our football team," Smith said. "We’re not talking on the future right now. The future is about that last press conference after the season. Right now, we’re talking – it’s just all things are geared towards the present and Green Bay. And right now, we’ll have a quarterback starting out there this week that gives us the best opportunity. If you’re on our roster right now, we like you being on our roster. I don’t know what else I can say besides that.”
When Smith was asked if he saw all he needed to see in Glennon during the five games he started, he responded by saying he "got a chance to see what Mike is during that time."
The staff, particularly Smith, has always maintained the theory of playing the guy that give them the best chance to win. He still feels McCown is the guy.
“I think Josh gives us our best opportunity [to win]. That’s not necessarily a knock against Mike," Smith said. "We start 11 guys, you can say that about every player that we dress. Quarterback just isn’t a position where you’re going to play a lot of guys. Kind of simple as that. It’s no knock against Mike. This is what we think gives us the best opportunity to play, period.”
At 2-12 it's obvious Tampa Bay doesn't have their answer at quarterback. As much as they want to say McCown gives them the best chance to win -- even though the offense seemed to move better with Glennon under center -- he clearly isn't the answer.
The answer is in the 2015 NFL Draft.
