With the 1st pick in the draft comes a huge decision for the Buccaneers organization. Most likely, a quarterback will be selected, but which one? Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston both have the size and natural God given talent. The real debate now is above the shoulders...for both QBs.
Bucs GM Jason Licht said on the Buccaneers Radio Network on Monday that he will be attending the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day. Obviously, with both Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota playing in the game, the question remains as to what exactly Jason Licht is looking for.
"Now we can go and watch how certain players interact on the sideline, interact with their teammates, interact with the coach, and you can see it in their eye - 'is this stage too big, is this stage too big for them,' and we obviously don't want those type of players," Licht said.
Take that for what it is worth, but Jameis Winston has been ideal in the categories Licht lists. With Jameis, his issues have always been off the field. Winston has always been a tremendous leader on the field, on the sideline, and interacting with his coach and teammates. Winston has also never had a stage too big for him.
Marcus Mariota might be the one to watch on Thursday night using Licht's parameters. Mariota is not known to be vocal at all and does not make audibles at the line himself. Instead, Mariota checks to the sideline before each play where the coaching staff is the ones making the audibles and adjustments necessary.
Jason Licht also did not hide his thoughts about the Florida State program.
"When you go to a school like Florida State and go to a game, they have so many pro prospects on the field that it's impossible to sit there in the press box and evaluate all of them," Jason Licht said. "Now is the time we can focus on a few of them."
My guess is that "a few of them" will include Jameis Winston and some of their offensive linemen.
