Tebow: Bucs Should Take Mariota

As Marcus Mariota prepares for potentially his final collegiate game tonight, there are Bucs fans everywhere hoping that his next game will be in a Bucs uniform. Perhaps, the most famous college football player of all time agrees with those fans.

As Marcus Mariota prepares for potentially his final collegiate game tonight, there are Bucs fans everywhere hoping that his next game will be in a Bucs uniform. Perhaps, the most famous college football player of all time agrees with those fans.

Former Gators QB Tim Tebow joined the "His and Hers" Show on ESPN to talk about Oregon QB Marcus Mariota and who the Bucs should take with the 1st pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

"Both of them are very talented," Tebow said when asked who the Bucs should take between Mariota and Jameis Winston. "You have to give Jameis a lot of credit. When you go two years in a row without losing a game, that's pretty impressive. He's got some leadership skills about him, in that 4th quarter and coming from behind, but I would go with Marcus just because I think his ceiling is a little bit higher with his athleticism."

Tebow said he recently spent time with Marcus Mariota and raved about his quiet leadership ability. Tebow said that Mariota leads by example, and that his teammates "play for him" and that Mariota is a "big time leader."

Obviously, with Tebow and Mariota, character issues don't come into play, but it is something he said the Bucs should look into with Winston.

"When you look at a player, you have to look at the total person and the total package," Tebow said of Jameis Winston's character concerns. "How will these guys translate into being a leader of men, not a leader of 18,19, or 20 year olds, but a leader of grown men. Will grown men choose to follow them?"

Another similarity between Tim Tebow and Marcus Mariota is the style of offense they play in college and how it translates into the NFL.

"Obviously, it's the things that are new to him," Tebow said of what Marcus Mariota will need to learn. "Getting under center and doing a five or seven step drop and throwing on time. That's something that he hasn't done. Doesn't mean he can't do it, it's just something that he hasn't done."

I know that it might not sound like that big of a deal to some, but those are the basics of an NFL quarterback. It's probably a main reason most college "spread" quarterbacks tend to fail in the NFL. It's also the reason most "NFL" people like Warren Moon, Donovan McNabb, NFL Films' Greg Cosell, ESPN's Trent Dilfer, and NFL.com's Bucky Brooks have all come out recently to say that Jameis Winston is the better quarterback right now.

If the Bucs are locked in on the Ducks star quarterback, it might mean more of Josh McCown in 2015 as Mariota will need time on the bench to properly develop.
