We're entering that time of year where mock drafts are all the rage. (NOTE: I don't release my 1st mock draft until after the combine) You'll notice that anybody who's anybody will have their own version of how the 2015 NFL Draft could play out. Mel Kiper is the Godfather of this, and he released his 1st mock draft on Thursday.
Kiper has not been shy about his belief that the Bucs will take Florida State QB Jameis Winston with the 1st overall selection. On ESPN the other day, Kiper said that Marcus Mariota will go somewhere between picks 2-6 because it is "safe to assume" the Bucs will take Jameis Winston.
Kiper has not backed down from this assumption in his 1st mock draft this draft season. With the 1st pick in his 1st mock draft, Mel Kiper has the Buccaneers selecting Jameis Winston.
Kiper's take on the Bucs pick:
"The bottom line is Winston is the most advanced on-field quarterback in the draft, and while the Buccaneers have a nice set of weapons for an emerging quarterback to utilize there's little evidence they have a future franchise quarterback on the current roster. Questions about Winston's maturity and off-field decision-making are more than fair and could have him written off some draft boards if he can't convince teams he can be a franchise leader. But on the field you get a big, durable, mobile, strong-armed talent with a high football IQ and an ability to read, anticipate and process at a very high level what defenses are trying to do. I would not draft with him with the goal of starting him in Week 1 -- his 2014 season proved there's work to be done -- but if Winston realizes his potential, he's a possible superstar."
Kiper does have Mariota going 2nd to the Titans, citing his concern with Mariota outside the Oregon offense as a reason he could drop.
Former NFL scout and NFL Draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah also had the Bucs selecting Jameis Winston in his mock draft released on Wednesday.
There's obviously still much time before the draft, and much to dissect between both quarterbacks until the Bucs are finally on the clock on April 30th.
