I think most Bucs fans have locked into the Bucs picking one of the top two quarterbacks in this class. While both Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston present positives for a desperate position on the Bucs roster, rushing the quarterback is also a desperate position. The top defensive end in this year's draft believes he should be the Bucs pick to start the draft.
"I think I'm worthy of the No. 1 pick. I would hope anybody in the draft would want to be the No. 1 pick. I know how I am as a player. I know my potential. I know what I can do. I know what I bring to a team. And I understand that this position is a premium," Gregory wrote in his USA Today diary entry over the weekend.
Michael Johnson was a massive bust as a free agent signing last off-season, and Jacquies Smith was a nice surprise, but probably not enough to say there's no need at end. With Adrian Clayborn and Daquan Bowers hitting free agency this off-season, defensive end is a need, but maybe not dire enough to pass up a franchise quarterback.
"Everyone wants someone that can get to the quarterback. Everyone wants a quarterback. Everyone wants a left tackle that can block that guy that wants to get to the quarterback," his diary continued. "I understand the game and where it's headed, and I understand that there's a big need, a big demand. I definitely think I'm worthy. And I definitely think I'll show that at the combine and when I get out there in the NFL."
I do believe Gregory is going to be a very good pass rusher in the NFL, but with potential franchise quarterbacks available and the Bucs having a need for that franchise quarterback, I find it hard to believe they will go in any other direction.
Gregory is right. I do expect him to be great during the combine and through the draft process. He should end up as a top 3 selection, and possibly go 2nd to the Titans.
