Jameis Winston had a very unusually early visit with the Bucs on Tuesday. Typically visits between teams and draft prospects do not occur this early in the process, but it appears the Buccaneers are taking the bull by the horns with the 1st overall pick.
The visit on Tuesday was likely more of a character and personality visit than football. Tuesday was an opportunity for Winston to meet with GM Jason Licht and head coach Lovie Smith in a much calmer environment than the combine was.
"I just want them to know that I am human and I'm a great person," Winston said on Buccaneers.com. "This smile isn't fake."
Winston reportedly also was able to meet with the Glazer family. Convincing the Glazers that he is worthy of the 1st overall selection on April 30th might be the final piece to this process despite having two more months to make the pick official.
"I just want to show them that I can be the face of this franchise one day," Winston said.
With Josh McCown already released and constant trade rumors circulating around Mike Glennon, the Bucs are likely to want the quarterback they select with the 1st overall pick to come in and start immediately. For Jameis Winston, that is his mindset as well.
"One thing about me is that I like to compete," Winston said when asked if he hopes to be a starter in 2015. "I look forward to competing anywhere, but hopefully it's here."
Winston had the opportunity to meet other members of the Buccaneers family while visiting One Buc Place on Tuesday, including wide receiver Vincent Jackson. Remember, in the video of Jameis Winston and Steve Mariucci from the combine, Winston pointed out that he hopes to have Vincent Jackson to throw to when explaining a play on the white board.
"I just introduced myself to him," Winston said of meeting Vincent Jackson. "I told him that I can't wait to get him the rock, so just make sure I'm in his mind a little bit. Hopefully, one day I'll be his quarterback and we can get this show on the road."
The Bucs have been in a downward spiral since winning the Super Bowl in 2003. A player like Jameis Winston can change all of those fortunes for the better.
I strongly encourage you to watch the entire video of Jameis Winston's interview on Buccaneers.com.
