I know we are reaching that time during NFL Draft season where everyone wants to over-think and over-analyze everything because they need the clicks on their site or they need to stay relevant. I get it. However, every sign out of One Buc Place appears to tell us that Jameis Winston will be the Bucs pick on April 30th.
Earlier this week, Winston made an unprecedentedly early visit to One Buc Place. Typically, prospects do not visit NFL teams until a few weeks into free agency, but the Bucs seem to be acting in a very aggressive nature with this first overall selection.
In a video on Buccaneers.com, Jameis Winston seems to be saying all the right things. Despite what idiot radio hosts have to say, it's refreshing to hear a player of Jameis Winston's stature say that he WANTS to be the "face of THIS franchise."
It appears as if the Bucs organization was impressed by Winston as well in the latest video on Buccaneers.com.
"He's lively. He's engaging. He's incredibly smart. He confirmed all the things we thought about him going into this process, but the process isn't done," Bucs GM Jason Licht said of Jameis Winston's visit to One Buc Place.
Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't recall the Bucs posting so much on their own site about a draft prospect's visit before. I'll continue to believe this is part of a masterful marketing campaign to prepare all Bucs fans for a Jameis Winston selection, and to rally all Bucs fans to get on-board. By doing that, maybe fans should also finally stop listening to old people scream into a microphone.
As for the Bucs, their actions have always spoken louder than their words, especially under Jason Licht and Lovie Smith.
"We haven't told anyone, 'this is who we're taking,'" Licht said. "We haven't told one player, 'you are the guy we're going to take.' We're still going to utilize the time that we have and make sure that we're making the right decision."
For me, this is code to say, "Jameis Winston is the pick unless something happens that doesn't make him the pick." Then the Bucs would have an out to select Marcus Mariota. All signs point to Winston and they have from the start. If Winston isn't the way the Bucs are thinking right now, then maybe that "masterful marketing campaign" isn't so masterful afterall because it could lead to confusion and disappointment among the majority of casual Bucs fans in the Tampa Bay area.
