Bobby Bowden made waves recently with comments he made about former FSU QB and current Bucs QB Jameis Winston. Bowden said that Winston was an "embarrassment in a lot of ways to the university."
"No. 1, Finebaum called me and asked me my opinion," Bowden said. "And I think my statement was ... that I felt like a majority of the alumni and boosters were probably embarrassed by some of the things that happened.
"Now that's no different than it was when I was coaching. Every time one of my boys got into trouble, I'm sure it embarrassed our people. So I don't see anything strange about that. I think all alumni, when they read the paper and see one of their players do something way out of line, I'm sure it's a little embarrassing if they have any pride in the university."
On Tuesday, following the press conference of Mike Alstott's and Doug Williams' induction into the Bucs' Ring of Honor, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times caught up with Lovie Smith. It's fair to say Lovie smith was not too pleased with Bowden.
"I'm disappointed. To say that the young man is an 'embarrassment?' That's pretty strong,'' Smith said to the Tampa Bay Times. "I just don't think he's speaking for all ..of Florida State, even though he's in an official role there. Normally, what we're doing today with our greats, you (embrace) them. Everybody on the outside may be throwing stones at them. Normally, when you're in a family, you don't do that. I'm very disappointed that somebody like that would make that type of statement.''
Jameis Winston has made some mistakes in his past, and some people won't be able to let them go. For the Bucs, when they selected Winston first overall, they were saying that his track record begins with them with a clean slate. So far, so good.Subscribe to The Commish Online Podcast on iTunes!
