We're down to just 53 days until the Bucs face off against an opposing team. Sure, it will only be the first of four preseason games, but it will also be a barometer of where this team may stand come the regular season. I can't think of a position that will be under more of a microscope than the offensive line. That's why today, we focus on Logan Mankins.
Mankins came to the Bucs at the end of the preseason a year ago. He didn't have much time to gel with his offensive line teammates or learn the Bucs' awful offense. Fast-forward to the present, Mankins has had a full off-season to regain his strength and learn the Bucs new and improved offensive system.
The Bucs need Logan Mankins now more than ever. No, he'll never be the All Pro he once was, but Mankins can still be a valuable commodity for the Bucs' young offensive linemen. Donovan Smith, Ali Marpet, Kadeem Edwards, and even Evan Smith are all young linemen in need of guidance. Mankins experience should be tapped into by each one of those players, but perhaps mostly by Marpet.
Ali Marpet comes from the tiny Hobart college, but his collegiate film is very reminiscent of a young Logan Mankins. The hope would be that Marpet can quickly learn from Mankins all of the tricks to becoming one of the top linemen in the NFL. Marpet must learn little techniques to use on the field, how to properly watch film, and how to prepare for the grind of an NFL season.
I'm not sure if Mankins can be a dominant lineman ever again, but he can help develop someone who can become that.Subscribe to The Commish Online Podcast on iTunes!
