As we head into July 4th weekend, I thought a great candidate to round out this week would be Vincent Jackson. There is nobody on the Bucs' roster that does as much with the military or for the community than Vincent Jackson does. Unlike some other players, the best part about Vincent Jackson is that he doesn't need every single one of his kind actions publicized.
The Buccaneers have struck out numerous times in recent years when it has come to free agency. The overspending of money on players like Dashon Goldson, Anthony Collins, Michael Johnson, and others has been the Bucs' biggest achilles heal. Vincent Jackson has been the big exception to that rule as he has become one of the Bucs' best free agent acquisition in franchise history.
In his three years with the Bucs, Vincent Jackson has never had less than 1,000 yards receiving in a season and has a total of 17 touchdown receptions. Let's also remember that, since coming to Tampa Bay, Jackson's quarterbacks have been Josh Freeman, Mike Glennon, and Josh McCown. With those three quarterbacks, it would be tough for most receivers to put up the production that Jackson has.
Jackson is 32 years old and still has a cap number north of $10 million per year. Jackson's current contract is set to expire following the 2016 season. Depending on the money Jackson may be looking for, if within reason, the Bucs could sign Jackson to one more contract and have him retire as a member of the Buccaneers.
“I'm feeling good. I'm feeling blessed. I definitely would love to finish in Tampa,” Jackson said recently.
With a young quarterback, a young fellow wide receiver, and a young team in general, keeping Jackson around as a leader/mentor who still contributes in a big way should be a top priority for the Bucs' brass. Also, Vincent Jackson's work in the community and with the military is another genuine portrayal of his character. Jackson is a person we need in this community and on this team for a long time. I hope Jason Licht makes it happen.Subscribe to The Commish Online Podcast on iTunes!
