The Buccaneers made it a point to improve the play of their safeties in 2015. They went out and signed Chris Conte in free agency and claimed D.J. Swearinger after he was waived by the Texans. One notable name out the door is Dashon Goldson, just a couple years removed from the massive contract he signed with the Bucs as a free agent.
Here is our prediction on how the safeties might be categorized:
DJ Swearinger - Swearinger is entering his 3rd NFL season after being a starter for the Texans during his first 2 seasons. We still don't know the whole reason the Texans cut their former 2nd round pick after just 2 seasons, but it's likely the Bucs give Swearinger every shot of being a starter for them.
Bradley McDougald - McDouglad came out of the depths last season to become the Bucs' most reliable safety. If he continues that strong development, McDougald could become a key member of the Bucs defense for a long time.
Chris Conte - Conte's relationship with Lovie Smith from their days in Chicago is important here. Conte has dealt with some injuries, but should prove to be a valuable reserve.
On the Bubble
Major Wright - The Bucs should keep at least one more safety on the final roster, and I think the odds are in Major Wright's favor. Wright is very talented, and even got a chance to start some in 2014.
Keith Tandy - Tandy's most valuable asset is his versatility. He can play safety or corner, but might contribute most on special teams.
