Buccaneers veteran center Evan Smith let it be known how hard he is on rookies some time ago. It’s not unusual for veterans to enforce a “know your role” policy with rookies, but many fans were upset with his approach towards rookie quarterback Jameis Winston.
Well, Bucs/Winston fans, you can sleep easy now because after mini-camps and three training camp practices, Smith appears to be warming up to Winston.
“I’m actually really impressed with his knowledge,” Smith said. “He’s obviously done a lot of hard work since the break. He’s really on top of his game. He still turns to me for stuff. I always talk to him, I’m always talking to him making sure he’s seeing the defense the way I see the defense, we’re getting the protections the way we want it. But what he’s doing right now, he has a real firm grasp on what we want to do and I’m not correcting him very much – let’s put it that way.”
Besides Smith appearing to be turning over a new leaf, it’s great to see Tampa Bay’s franchise quarterback getting a grasp of things and performing well on the field and in the class room. It is still very early in the progress, but all signs have pointed to improvement from Winston so far.
