WATCH: More Movement with Bucs Offensive Line

The Buccaneers continue to be active with their offensive line. Ali Marpet was back with the starters at practice, while Gosder Cherilus arrived to what Lovie Smith called a real chance to play.

Raise your hand if you're surprised that Ali Marpet took over for Garrett Gilkey at right guard on the Bucs starting offensive line at practice.

Anyone?

Bueller?

Well, I have my hand raised. I guess, since we got this far without the Bucs realizing that Gilkey was far more a liability than solution along their offensive line, I was afraid they'd never figure it out. In my opinion, the potential for Marpet is through the roof. I think he's a future All Pro and is ready to play right now.

The Bucs also have questions at right tackle with Demar Dotson out for a significant amount of time and Kevin Pamphile missing some practice time as well with a minor injury. They did sign right tackle Gosder Cherilus on Monday. Cherilus had a lot of success early in his career with the Lions, and faced Lovie Smith's Bears twice a year.

"After he went to the Lions and playing against him twice a year – tough, physical football player, good guy," Lovie said. "We drafted one of his teammates on our team in Chicago, so we know quite a bit about him.”

Lovie would also say that the Bucs brought Cherilus in to play.

“That’s up for grabs, but you don’t bring a player in like that unless you plan on him helping you out in some kind of way fairly soon," Lovie said. "Again, after one practice we’ll kind of see, but we wouldn’t bring him in unless we thought he could help us this year.”

As for Cherilus, he practiced for the first time with the Bucs on Tuesday. This was a practice he had wanted to take part in for quite some time.

"We got the phone call…I've always wanted to be here in a way," Cherilus said. "I'm good friends with Davin Joseph [and] Jeremy Trueblood. We go way back to when [Jon] Gruden was here. I know they were trying to draft me back then. I had a chance to be here and I told my agent, 'Hey, I've been home for a couple of weeks, I know we're still going back and forth with a couple of teams.' I come here and it's my first time where I have a chance to play for a hot-weather team and play on grass the whole year. I told him, 'Hey, find a way to get it done,' and he got it done."

During his first practice with the Bucs, Cherilus was splitting 2nd team reps with Patrick Omameh, while Reid Fragel was taking snaps with the Bucs starting offensive line. Look for Cherilus to quickly rise up the depth chart.
