As if things couldn't get any worse for the Bucs starting offensive line. Rookie left tackle Donovan Smith was forced to miss practice on Monday with an ankle injury. Smith was spotted wearing a plastic boot by the Tampa Tribune's Roy Cummings.
Not only does the Bucs offensive line lack talent, they're also dealing with a lot of injuries. I got to see Demar Dotson in the locker room today, and he is still limping noticeably on his knee even with a massive knee brace on. 2nd year OT Kevin Pamphile has also been out for an extended period.
With Pamphile still out, behind Donovan Smith is only Edawn Coughman. The other offensive tackles on the Bucs roster are limited to right tackle. This should be a major concern for Jason Licht and Lovie Smith moving forward as they try to figure out how to protect their franchise quarterback.
The Buccaneers still have the top waiver wire position, so you'd imagine if any quality offensive linemen are cut by other teams, the Bucs will be quick to snatch them up. Also, do not rule out a trade. Jason Licht has shown a willingness over the last couple years to make a trade if a player he likes becomes available. Last year he traded for Logan Mankins, and this year he has already made a trade with the Detroit Lions.
In the end, Donovan Smith should be ready for the regular season, but this does make you think of what the Bucs could face if Smith goes down again in the regular season. As my infant daughter just learned how to say, "uh oh."
