Bucs Blitz Prospect Week 5

Each week during the college football season, we will discuss some of the college prospects who have good matchups to watch.

Ole Miss @ Florida, October 3rd on ESPN @ 7:00 P.M.

Laquon Treadwell, Wide Receiver, Ole Miss

Treadwell enters his Junior season coming off a 2014 campaign that ended early thanks to a bad leg injury. Treadwell is healthy again and comes into the season standing 6’2” and weighing in at 212 lbs. Treadwell looks like he still has his burst and lateral quickness  and he will need every ounce of it this week as he goes against the nation’s top corner, Vernon Hargreaves III.

·         Tracks ball and high points passes naturally

·         Fluid athlete with the ball in hands

·         Gamer, full throttle in everything he does

·         Plus body control along the sidelines with good awareness

·         Health in the knee will be the thing to watch. Hargreaves III will stick to his hip and will be Treadwell’s best opponent he’s faced to date.

Current draft outlook: Day 1 Selection

Vernon Hargreaves III, Corner Back, Florida

The Tampa product has not disappointed as he’s lived up to all the hype and more since stepping foot on the UF campus. Hargreaves III has regularly shut down opponents and he gets to show out against one of the top receivers in the country Saturday. Hargreaves stands at 5’11” and 198 lbs of pure aggression and desire.

·         Impeccable quickness and explosion out of the backpedal

·         Lockdown ability when in coverage, mirrors and runs route on receivers hip

·         Great open field tackler and shows ability to blitz off edge as well as be an effective run support defender

·         Off-coverage ability to go with press skills, effective route jumper with good body control

·         Shorter than some teams prefer outside at corner, will tackle high which needs to be corrected. Lower target must be achieved to bring down NFL playmakers.

Current draft outlook: Day 1 Selection

Pittsburgh @ Virginia Tech, October 3rd on ESPN3 @ 12:00 P.M.

Tyler Boyd, Wide Receiver, Pittsburgh

Boyd enters his junior season with a need to shoulder the offensive load after the James Conner MCL injury took out the teams NFL prospect running back. Boyd stands 6’2” and weights 200 lbs and is coming off back to back 1,000 yard receiving seasons as a freshman and sophomore.

·         Separates with technique and strength

·         Very good concentration and body control

·         Keenan Allen type game speed, top end isn’t fast but strides and shiftiness get the job done.

·         Top end speed will lead to questions about ability to take top off of NFL defenses

·         Lacks new-age size/speed/aggression combination that some teams prefer in #1 receivers.

Current draft outlook: Day 2 Selection

Michigan @ Maryland, October 3rd on BTN @ 8:00 P.M.

James Ross III, Outside Linebacker, Michigan

Outside of Michigan, James Ross is mostly an unknown player to the masses. Ross enters his senior year with 18 starts and relatively no production after posting only 32 tackles in 2014. Ross stands 6’1” and weighs in at 232 lbs. After three games in 2015, Ross has 9 total tackles with 2 coming for a loss. Ross should find his way up into the late part of day 3 as a special teams contributor.

·         Physical build to excel on special teams and as a strong side linebacker prospect

·         Active hands that keep him off blocks to go with a good initial step off the snap

·         Strength is above average and allows him to move tight ends off the spot to get the ball carrier and maintain the outside

·         Struggles to stay in position against the pass. Discipline is lacking.

·         Needs to work on diagnostic skills as well as needs to work on trusting the system and playing within it.

Current draft outlook: Day 3 Selection

William Likely, Corner Back, Maryland

The junior out of Belle Glade Florida is still looking to make an impression to solidify himself as a potential day 2 prospect. Entering week 5, Likely has shown his ability to return punts as he did so in a 233 yard effort against Richmond.   Likely stands only 5’7” and weighs in at 176 lbs.

·         Elite athleticism helps him overcome his height issues at corner

·         Great balance, change of direction and agility

·         Multi-faceted weapon as he can line up outside or in the slot for Maryland as well as provide high level special teams help as a return man.

·         Good ball skills as shown by his 15 pass defenses, 6 INT’s and 2 pick sixes in 2014.

·         Size and tackling are going to be a factor as outside receivers in the NFL will be able to pick apart Likely’s size issues. In the slot Likely looks to be a solid Cover 2/Zone dominant scheme where he can keep his eyes on the QB and break on the ball.

Current draft outlook: Day 3 Selection
