Bucs Blitz Prospect Watch Week 6

Each week during the college football season, we will discuss some of the college prospects who have good matchups to watch.

Washington @ Southern Cal, October 8th on ESPN @ 9:00 PM

Jaydon Mickens, Wide Receiver, Washington

Mickens is entering his senior year and stands 5’10” while weighing in at 174 lbs.  Mickens is a slot receiver prospect looking to add to his versatility as a receiver to lock in his draft stock. Mickens comes in after posting back to back years of 60+ receptions, 600 yards receiving and 4+ TD’s.

·         Displays good quickness and short area bursts

·         Shows good body control and the ability to adjust and contort towards the ball

·         Scrappy player that works the underneath patterns with ease

·         Size and top end speed limitations hinder overall versatility on offense

·         Must work on focus at the point of the reception and work on getting vertical quick after the catch.

Max Tuerk, Center, Southern Cal

Tuerk enters his senior year as vested and versatile lineman for USC. Standing 6’6” and weighing 285 lbs, many will see comparisons to 2015 draft pick Cam Erving. Tuerk has worked all along the USC offensive line prior to settling in at center where he was named ALL-PAC-12 in 2014.   

·         Incredible athlete at the position

·         Highly versatile with ability to move along the line, interior line is where he’s best suited after center.

·         Plays with good leverage and stays low thru his blocks

·         Works laterally with ease and changes direction well. Excellent pull blocker.

·         Still new to snapping at center as he only has a year under his belt. With another year of experience, Tuerk should be the first center taken.

Illinois @ Iowa, October 10th on ESPNU @ 12:00 PM

Josh Ferguson, Running Back, Illinois

Ferguson enters his senior year looking to prove that the offensive woes at Illinois aren’t on him.  Ferguson stands 5’9” and weighs in at 195 lbs. Ferguson is coming off a 735 yard and 8 TD season on the ground while adding 50 receptions for over 400 yards and 2 touchdowns in the air.

·         Reliable hands in the passing game

·         Runs with balance and shiftiness

·         Will run thru contact and fight thru tackles

·         Bit hesitant behind the LOS, often waiting too long for play to develop

·         Must work on pass protection of the quarterback

Drew Ott, Defensive End, Iowa

Ott enters his senior year as the big man on campus after Carl Davis’ departure for the NFL in 2015 draft. Ott takes his 6’4”, 272 lb body and will put it to the test this season as the focal point of his team’s defense.   

·         Good motor and determination

·         Power player relying on strength to rush the passer

·         Plus run-stopper with potential to move inside in a 4-3 with some added mass

·         Slow to react off the snap

·         Limited balance and bend off the edge

Arkansas @ Alabama, October 10th on ESPN @ 7:00 PM

Denver Kirkland, Offensive Tackle, Arkansas

Kirkland is a massive prospect standing 6’5” and weighing in at 340 lbs. Kirkland is a junior that’s asked to anchor the offensive line for Arkansas and is an ascending player with surprising athleticism for his size. 

·         Powerful lower half with strong punch at the point of attack

·         Bulldozer in the run game

·         Plays with solid balance

·         Struggles with speed off the edge, may be best inside at next level

·         Must work on mirror skills and footwork as a pass protector.

Cyrus Jones, Corner Back, Alabama

Jones is a senior for Alabama that comes in standing 5’10” and weighing 196 lbs. Jones is entering his 3rd year at cornerback for the Crimson Tide. Jones comes in after having off-season hip surgery.

·         Physical corner with decent length at the position

·         Jones plays the ball well in the air and has shown positive ball skills

·         About average technique in coverage, needs work

·         Instincts are lacking at the moment

·         Must show better discipline and run support to help improve stock
