Bucs Blitz Prospect Watch Week 7

Each week during the college football season, we will discuss some of the college prospects who have good matchups to watch.

Auburn @ Kentucky, Thursday October 15th on ESPN @ 7:00 PM

Montravius Adams, Defensive Tackle, Auburn

Adams, once a top high school prospect, has not quite lived up to standard as the disruptive force Auburn hoped he would be. At 6’3” 296 lbs, Adams has good measurements and the body to put to hold his weight. He started 2015 as the top dog on the d-line after several key departures on defense and looks to help right the ship on defense against Kentucky this week.

·         Solid frame and slender build

·         Quick off the snap with good short area quickness

·         Has shown ability to split the gap and get penetration thru one on one matchups

·         Relatively inconsistent snap to snap

·         Will get lazy with technique and swallowed up at times against double teams

Current draft outlook: Day 3 Selection

Jordan Swindle, Offensive Tackle, Kentucky

Swindle seems to be a relative unknown despite playing in the SEC. After two seasons as a starting tackle for Kentucky, Swindle has started his 3rd straight year outside as a senior out of St. Johns Florida. Swindle stands 6’7” and weighs in at 309 lbs.

·         Swindle tends to get a bit upright in his stance

·         Solid footwork

·         Ability to mirror defender movement wise

·         Struggles against power

·         Has shown consistent growth in game as a run blocker. Must improve strength and pad level in pass protection.

Current draft outlook: Day 3 Selection

UNLV @ Fresno State, Friday October 16th on ESPN2 @ 10:30 PM

Peni Vea, Strong Safety, UNLV

Vea has been the starting safety for 3+ years now and has been a consistent tackling machine for the Rebels. Vea is a redshirt Senior standing 6’0” and weighing in at 205 lbs. With just under 200 total tackles from the safety position in the last two seasons, Vea has racked up another 46 total tackles through 6 games in 2015.

·         Downhill attacker

·         Plays with good pad level and aggression in the run game

·         Vea still struggles when asked to play man but has shown the ability to sit back in a zone

·         Vea must work on angles taken in coverage as well as play recognition and vision, often biting on play action

·         Look for Vea to come up and make the stops against Waller and co. in the Fresno State backfield.

Current draft outlook: Day 3 Selection to Undrafted.

Marteze Waller, Running Back, Fresno State

Waller enters this matchup as the lead back for Fresno State and has accumulated 2/3rds of the teams rushing yards.  The senior running back is coming off a 1,300 yard season where he posted double digit touchdowns for the Bulldogs. Waller stands 5’11” and weighs in at 209 lbs.

·         Good balance through contact

·         Good footwork and 1-cut ability

·         Needs to improve hands and pass protection

·         Lacks ideal burst

Current draft outlook: Day 3 Selection to Undrafted

Arizona State @ Utah, Saturday October 17th on ESPN @ 10:00 PM

Lloyd Carrington, Corner Back, Arizona State

Carrington is a rSr standing 5’11” and weighing in at 194 lbs.  Carrington is coming off  a strong 2014 season in which his versatility was on full display with 3 sacks, 59 total tackles 5 passes defended and one interception.

·         Good instincts and ball skills

·         Shows ability to press defender and force re-route at the LOS

·         Physical at the point of attack and a willing run defender

·         Excellent recognition post snap of the play

·         Top end speed will be in question but the ability to play the ball and spatial awareness makes Carrington a zone corner prospect worth watching

Current draft outlook: Day 2 Selection

Devontae Booker, Running Back, Utah

Booker is a redshirt Senior who is amidst his second year as the teams featured back (Formerly a JUCO player). Coming of a 2014 campaign where Booker totaled over 1,800 yards and 12 touchdowns on offense, he’s picked up where he left off with 850 yards and 6 touchdowns through 5 games in 2015. Booker stands a stout 5’11” and 212 lbs.  Bucs fans may see a resemblance in the overall style of play by Booker to that of Doug Martin.

·         Powerful runner that won’t shy away from contact

·         Quick, crisp footwork to combine with good awareness and balance

·         Good one cut runner that accelerates with ease

·         Has shown decent hands in the pass game

·         Willing but struggling pass protector

·         Lacks the high end gear of some other RB prospects

Current draft outlook: Day 2 Selection
