Bucs Sign G/C Hires To 53-Man Roster

September 8 - Tampa Bay signed C/G Leon Hires to their 53-active roster Saturday for the game against Dallas on Sunday. Hires will backup C Todd Washington, who is playing in place of injured Pro Bowl C Jeff Christy. By signing Hires, the Buccaneers' were forced to release DE Ron Warner.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were hoping starting C Jeff Christy would be able to recover from a sprained MCL injury he suffered in the Cleveland Browns game in time for opening day at Dallas.

As it turns out, Christy will not play against Dallas and may not make it back in time for the Philadelphia game next week. Fourth-year C Todd Washington, who has played in Christy's place since he was injured, will start against Dallas on Sunday.

But Tampa Bay needed a backup center just in case Washington were to go down with an injury, so they signed practice squad G/C Leon Hires to their active roster.

Hires was released by the Buccaneers on September 2, but was then signed to their practice squad last Monday.

In order to make room for Hires on the 53-man active roster, Tampa Bay released DE Ron Warner.

Tampa Bay will likely sign Warner back to their active roster when Christy recovers from his MCL injury, but that could be as far away as the Bucs-Vikings game in week 4.

Hires will wear the number 70 jersey.
