Center Of Attention

Free agent acquisition John Wade is an invaluable addition to an offensive line that was inconsistent last year. Wade was largely responsible for the success the Jacksonville Jaguars had rushing the football last year. With his help the Jags ranked 10th in the league in rushing. The 28-year old five-year veteran is entering his prime as a player while still refining his game.

The offensive line was anything but stellar last year especially in the early going. Quarterback Brad Johnson was thrown around like a rag doll in some instances. But with all due respect to the offensive line that are now sporting Super Bowl hardware, they came together when it counted the most. Perhaps no unit on the field relies more on familiarity than the offensive line, making the signing of John Wade just 11 days into the free agency period a good move.

Just as impressive as his physical strength is his durability. Wade started all 16 games for the Jaguars last year. Although he is still getting accustomed to the offensive line calls as well as his new teammates coach John Gruden praised the mammoth 6'5, 299-pound center. "We like the physical presence that Wade brings. He is a good signal caller and a good leader. I like the strategic advantage that he can put us in making the right calls".

On rookie tackle Lance Nimmo, coach shared these thoughts. "He is doing some good things out there. We do like the competitiveness we see but he is also a young guy and still has a ways to go. Roman Oben is injury free this year where last year he was lucky to just make it through a practice".

Jon also offered these comments on Kenyatta Walker and Cosey Coleman. "Those guys came into camp stronger and faster. They are more in-tune with one another and this system. I am not saying that there anywhere near where they are capable of going but they're better. At the same time we have no wins yet and a long way to go".

The offensive line looks to sustain consistency this year while building on their foundation. John Wade will be a big part of the offense's success and, by the praise of his new head coach, he will only add stability to an ever-improving group.
