BucMag.com Bucs MVP: QB Brad Johnson

September 9 - New Buccaneers quarterback Brad Johnson had a great debut for Tampa Bay by completing 74.3 percent of his passes and scoring a touchdown in the fourth quarter in the Pewter Pirates' 10-6 road win against the Dallas Cowboys.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers gutted out a 10-6 victory against the Dallas Cowboys to earn a 1-0 record on opening day with new quarterback Brad Johnson leading the way. Johnson, who is this week's BuMag.com Bucs MVP, was accurate and efficient in moving the new Bucs offense down the field and maintaining a huge edge in time of possession. He was 26-of-35 passing (74.3 percent) for 195 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard quarterback sneak.

He started the game off red hot, completing his first nine passes in a row. Johnson did throw one interception and had another one negated due to a penalty, but his patience in the pocket and willingness to settle for the underneath passes when the Cowboys defense gave them to the Bucs was a refreshing sight from a Buccaneers quarterback.

It's apparent by the Bucs' lack of point production that Johnson and his mates on offense are still learning each other's traits as well as new offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen's playbook, but early road win was a good start.

Johnson will have to continue to throw the ball quickly and perhaps look downfield more often next week when Philadelphia comes calling.
