Yes, I know there is a large contingent of Bucs' fans hoping the team drafts Gators CB Vernon Hargreaves in late April. While that's a cute idea, I'd much rather address cornerback in free agency, if possible, and open the team up to drafting truly the best player available with their first round pick. I don't think Vernon Hargreaves would be the best player on the board.
Free agency could be loaded with cornerbacks this off-season. You might have names like Leon Hall, Sean Smith, Prince Amukamara, and Adam Jones all become available in just about a week. Hell, even Antonio Cromartie is now available.
With all of those names in the mix, the Bucs should have a close eye on the LA Rams. The Rams have both Janoris Jenkins and Trumaine Johnson slated to be free agents. One of these two corners will likely get some type of tag from the Rams, but the other has a very good chance of hitting free agency. This is where the Bucs need to attack.
Both Jenkins and Johnson are young corners who bring their own style to the field. Janoris Jenkins is a playmaker, who is a little bit smaller, but thrives in man coverage on the outside. Johnson is a bigger corner who plays with a physical intensity on defense. Both players would be instant upgrades for the Bucs, and allow the Bucs to keep Johnthan Banks, and Alterraun Verner in roles that are better suited for them.
I believe the Bucs will be strategically aggressive in free agency, and be willing to spend big money on specific free agents.
UPDATE: The Rams placed their franchise tag on Trumaine Johnson, meaning Janoris Jenkins may be hitting free agency.
