The Tampa Bay fans have spoken. The mock draft "Gurus" have spoken. Even Ronde Barber is calling for it. The most popular pick at number 9 to the Bucs right now is Vernon Hargreaves III.
The 5'10 corner out of University of Florida is no doubt a great athlete. Called the best cover corner in this years draft. A local kid, always repping his "Tampa" cleats, VH3 oozes confidence, even calling himself "the best in the world" at his craft.
Here are the well known draft analysts who have Vernon Hargreaves III mocked to the Bucs in their latest mock drafts:
Mel Kiper Jr. - ESPN
Todd McShay - ESPN
Daniel Jeremiah - NFL Network
Charles Davis - NFL Network
Will Brinson - CBS Sports
Peter Schrager- Fox Sports
Personally, I don't agree with it, but for the sake of the fans, and the "brilliant" minds of the football networks on TV, I will explain what the Bucs must do if they make this choice at 9.
Selecting VH3 will put the Bucs with Brent Grimes, Hargreaves, Alterraun Verner, Johnthan Banks, and Josh Robinson on the CB depth chart. You better damn well believe if Hargreaves is the pick at 9, he will be starting opposite Grimes. That leaves Alterraun Verner playing nickel, which is actually something he is comfortable doing. This also leaves out Johnthan Banks. If I were the Bucs, I'd try Banks to his old HS position and let him play safety.
With VH3 as the first round pick, the Bucs are still in serious desperate need of an edge rusher. Having small corners in both starting slots, a dominant and/or consistent pass rush may be the Bucs' only shot against big receivers like Kelvin Benjamin and Julio Jones. Defensive end and defensive tackle become even more of a priority if another 5'10'' corner is selected by the Bucs.
With all this said, there are some analysts who don't even believe Hargreaves is the best cover corner in this draft.
Beware, having two sub 6 foot starting Cornerbacks is asking for trouble in the NFC South.
