Bucs NFL Draft Focus: Cornerback

Leading up to Thursday night and the NFL Draft, we breakdown the Bucs' needs and the players to remember at that position on draft weekend.

Bucs Need at Cornerback: 3 out of 5

The perceived need at cornerback for the Bucs has been severely overblown by fans and the media. Yes, the Bucs could use another young cornerback, but acting like it's their most pressing need is very naive. Brent Grimes was paid a lot of money to come in and be a starter. Johnthan Banks and Alterraun Verner are getting fresh starts in Mike Smith's new defense, which fits their skill set a lot better. Josh Robinson was brought in for depth, and Jude Adjei-Barimah was a nice surprise in his rookie season.

5 Names to Remember on Draft Weekend:

Vernon Hargreaves III | Florida | 1st round
Hargreaves is small in stature (5'10'') and has short arms (30"), but is feisty and physical with opposing receivers. Hargreaves size is a legit concern as it has been reported that several teams, including the Dolphins, view him as no better than a 2nd cornerback. Others view his instincts as good enough to make up for a lack of size.

Ryan Smith | North Carolina Central | 3rd round
Small-school prospect with excellent athleticism and tenacity. Smith seems to have good size, but his 30" arms are less than desirable. Smith didn't start playing football until he was a senior in high school. At North Carolina Central, he played safety his first 2 years before transitioning to cornerback his last two seasons. Smith did visit the Bucs during the pre-draft process.

DJ White | Georgia Tech | 3rd Round
White seems to do everything well, but nothing elite. He was a 3-year starter and captain for Georgia Tech's defense. White is clean in and out of his breaks, and has excellent short area quickness.

Rashard Robinson | LSU | 4th Round
Robinson is a long corner who is ultra-athletic, but coming off a year when he didn't play football, there are plenty of concerns surrounding Robinson. LSU coach Les Miles never reinstated Robinson after suspending him indefinitely for academics, and instead of transferring to another school, Robinson sat out 2015 and prepared for the NFL. He's talented and just doesn't like school, I guess.

James Bradberry | Samford | 5th Round
Bradberry is a big body at cornerback at 6'1'' and 211 lbs with nice speed at 4.50 in the 40. Bradberry also has long arms at over 33" with gives him the length to match up with bigger receivers. As is with small school prospects, technique needs to be improved and developed.
