The moment the Bucs selected Florida State kicker Roberto Aguayo in the 2nd round of the 2016 NFL Draft, the criticism began. The Bucs were taking it from all sides. I mean, who trades up into the the 2nd round, with as many needs as the Bucs have, and take a freaking kicker? The answer is Jason Licht.
"The importance of special teams is paramount," Licht said after selecting Aguayo. "When you get a chance to get the best kicker in the history of college football, I didn’t want to risk it. I wanted to take him. I have a lot of confidence in him; I like the way he’s wired. I like the body of work that he’s put out there, obviously. A great kicker can be the difference in several games."
We knew Licht was confident, but some of the more respected draft analysts were also pleased with the Bucs pick of Aguayo.
Former NFL scouts Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks co-host the "Move the Sticks" podcast together on NFL.com. When talking about their favorite draft selections for each NFL team, they both gushed over the pick of Aguayo for the Bucs.
"People knocked it, but Tampa Bay with Roberto Aguayo, the best kicker to come out in a long time," NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah said. "He will have a direct impact on more games than just about any other rookie in this draft."
"Love the pick," Bucky Brooks chimed in.
Jeremiah is exactly right. We don't know if Aguayo is definitely going to be an elite or top 5 kicker in the NFL, but we do know he will have a direct impact on more games than about 95% of any of player selected in this year's draft. Let's just hope it's a positive impact for the Bucs.
