Well Buccaneers fans, day one of training camp is in the books. The recent buzz has been about the “newly-defined” quarterback, Jameis Winston. While the offseason was for the most part quiet, Winston has been receiving praise for his work ethic and willingness to make him better, and the team better.
“We want to be the thermostat, and not the thermometer,” Winston said. “We want to set a high mentality, high tempo, get the juices flowing and get some excitement out there.”
Jameis is a smart, young man who knows that one year doesn’t define a career. His offseason actions should speak for themselves. He knows he is far from where he and the team need to be. For an up and coming player, and future star in this league, Winston addressed what he took away from day one of year two.
“Got to get better,” Winston said. “First day is always an exciting day. It’s exciting because we have these fans out here, all these kids here running around, and it always feels good to put on a show in front of the fans. So we’re excited but we know that we got a long way to go, we know that we need to continue to get better, but I’m looking forward to getting better with this group of guys.”
Winston’s mention to kids running around was in reference to “Kid’s Day” for day one. After the well-covered meeting between Winston and McCoy, I think we can say that the Bucs QB is raising the flag. Tampa Bay has the chance to see something special at the quarterback position for the first time since Doug Williams.
