From Bad to Worse - Alstott Placed on IR

Bucs fullback Mike Alstott was placed on injured reserve today with a neck injury re-aggravated Monday night against the Colts. Alstott, whose neck has been bothering him for the past three weeks, missed two days of practice last week for tests. After traveling to Pittsburgh Sunday for further testing, he was cleared to play Monday night.

General Manager Rich McKay said the injury is not believed to be career-threatening. "In looking at it today and talking to the doctors, the safe way to go is to shut Mike down," McKay said. "It should not affect his career. He should be able to return, based on where it is and what it is. But it is something that more than likely will require surgery."

"This is a terrible blow to our football team," said Bucs head coach Jon Gruden. "Mike Alstott is a great leader and a great player. We are counting on him coming back even better next year. We will miss him, but we have to step up."

In Alstott's absence, Jameel Cook will start in the fullback position.
