Brooks Is MVP

September 30 - Buccaneers LB Derrick Brooks recorded 20 tackles and one interception in Tampa Bay's 20-16 loss to the Vikings. Brooks is Buccaneer Magazine's Game MVP for his outstanding performance against Minnesota on Sunday.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers suffered their first defeat of the 2001 season at the hands of the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. While Tampa Bay's offense could only muster up 16 points and was a woeful 1-of-8 on third downs, the Bucs defense was equally bad, allowing Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper to complete 68 percent of his passes, convert almost every third down and engineer a 96-yard scoring drive for the victory.

Among the Bucs defenders doing his best to try to stop Minnesota's offensive attack was Pro Bowl linebacker Derrick Brooks, who is this week's Buccaneer Magazine Pewter Player of the Game.

Brooks racked up a game-high 20 tackles and recorded a first half interception. Brooks' 20 stops were two shy of his career-high of 22, which he set last year against Buffalo.

Brooks was everywhere on Sunday supporting the run and dropping back into zone coverage and man coverage to defend against the Vikings' potent receivers. Unfortunately for Brooks, he was caught up in a three-man effort to stop Byron Chamberlain's key 37-yard grab on the game-winning drive.

Brooks wishes he would have made tackle No. 21.
