LAST WEEK: The desperate Tennessee Titans apparently were not desperate enough in their 26-7 loss to the hometown Baltimore Ravens. The Titans only touchdown came on a blocked punt by Donald Mitchell and he returned 26-yards for the TD. Ravens RB Terry Allen rushed for 108 yards and helped Baltimore take a 17-0 lead into halftime. Ravens QB Elvis Grbac completed 15-of-31 passes for 259 yards, including a 77-yard touchdown bomb to WR Qadry Ismail. Titans QB Steve McNair completed 17-of-32 passes for 154 yards and one interceptions. McNair was sacked three times.
Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won their home opener against the undefeated Green Bay Packers with the help LB Shelton Quarles and FB Mike Alstott. Quarles intercepted Packers QB Brett Favre on the first play of the second quarter and returned it 92-yards for a Bucs touchdown. In the fourth quarter and the Bucs trailing 10-7, FB Mike Alstott made a terrific 39-yard run for a touchdown and lead. The defense held off a late surge by the Packers and QB Brett Favre.
LAST SEASON The Titans finished last season in 1st place of the AFC Central Division with a 13-3 record, but were eliminated by the Ravens in the second round of the playoffs.
THE LAST TIME THESE TWO TEAMS MET: 1998- Tampa Bay hosted the Tennessee Oilers at Raymond James Stadium on Sunday Night Football one season before they changed their name to the Titans. The Bucs had a 16-3 lead at halftime, but lost 31-22. The Oilers/Titans rushed for 236 total yards, including 134 by RB Eddie George.
