Tampa Bay Signs LB Thweatt to Practice Squad

October 17 – The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed LB Byron Thweatt to their practice squad on Wednesday. The Bucs signed Thweatt after linebackers Derrick Brooks and Jeff Gooch remain injured. To make room for Thweatt on the practice squad, Tampa Bay released DT Devone Claybrooks.

The Buccaneers added a familiar face to their practice squad on Wednesday when they signed rookie LB Byron Thweatt. To make room for Thweatt on their five-man practice squad, Tampa released rookie DT Devone Claybrooks.

Thweatt (6-2, 233) signed with the Buccaneers as a college free agent on April 23 and had a solid outing in mini-camp and training camp. But Thweatt was a victim of a surplus of veteran depth at the linebacker position and was released on the final roster cut day, which was Sept. 2.

The reason Thweatt was signed on Wednesday morning is fairly obvious. The Buccaneers have two veteran linebackers banged up in special teams' standout Jeff Gooch (Groin) and starting ROLB Derrick Brooks (Foot). Brooks is expected to most of this week's practices and will be reevaluated on Friday. Gooch, however, is expected to miss 3-4 weeks with his injury.

By signing Thweatt, the Buccaneers cleared room on their practice squad by releasing rookie DT Devone Claybrooks. He played collegiately at East Carolina and was signed to Tampa Bay's practice squad on Sept. 4.
