Thweatt (6-2, 233) signed with the Buccaneers as a college free agent on April 23 and had a solid outing in mini-camp and training camp. But Thweatt was a victim of a surplus of veteran depth at the linebacker position and was released on the final roster cut day, which was Sept. 2.
The reason Thweatt was signed on Wednesday morning is fairly obvious. The Buccaneers have two veteran linebackers banged up in special teams' standout Jeff Gooch (Groin) and starting ROLB Derrick Brooks (Foot). Brooks is expected to most of this week's practices and will be reevaluated on Friday. Gooch, however, is expected to miss 3-4 weeks with his injury.
By signing Thweatt, the Buccaneers cleared room on their practice squad by releasing rookie DT Devone Claybrooks. He played collegiately at East Carolina and was signed to Tampa Bay's practice squad on Sept. 4.
