Johnson's 40 completions set a new team record and his 56 attempts tied a franchise record. He completed 71 percent of his passes for 399 yards against Chicago.
Although Johnson did not throw a touchdown pass for the first time in four weeks, his 1-yard touchdown plunge with 2:40 left in the fourth quarter and subsequent two-point conversion pass to Mike Alstott brought the Bucs to within three points, 27-24.
Twenty-four of Johnson's 40 completions on the day were to Warrick Dunn and Keyshawn Johnson, who each caught a team-record 12 passes.
Johnson became the first Bucs quarterback to throw for more than 300 yards since Trent Dilfer threw for 301 against Minnesota on Nov. 3, 1999. That's 37-straight games between 300-yard passers.
