Through nine games this season, Sapp and Co. were mysteriously having a hard time producing sacks and getting pressure on quarterbacks. Sapp recorded 20 tackles and just three sacks through nine games. But against the Rams, Sapp recorded three tackles, two sacks for 17 yards, forced one fumble, recovered another one and relentlessly pressured Rams QB Kurt Warner en route to Tampa Bay's 24-17 win at St. Louis.
In the first quarter of Monday night's game, Bucs LB Shelton Quarles forced Rams WR Isaac Bruce to fumble at midfield, and Sapp recovered the ball to halt a Rams drive and set up a 54-yard touchdown drive by Tampa Bay's offense.
Sapp recorded his second sack of the game in the second quarter when he sacked Warner on first down at Tampa Bay's 15-yard line. Sapp's sack would eventually cause St. Louis to settle for a field goal.
Later in the second quarter, Sapp continued to raise havoc by hitting Warner's arm and forcing a fumble. Bucs DE Marcus Jones fell on the ball and the turnover would lead to a 36-yard K Martin Gramatica field goal.
In the third quarter, Sapp made a huge statement to his defense and the St. Louis offense when he wrapped up and slammed Rams RB Marshall Faulk to the turf for a four-yard loss. Faulk would leave the game temporarily with a sore shoulder and Tampa Bay's defense would continue to feed off of Sapp's intensity.
Sapp leads the Buccaneers defense in sacks this season with five and has also recorded 30 tackles, forced two fumbles and recovered two.
Sapp is the second Tampa Bay player to win this award this season. In Week 9, Bucs CB Ronde Barber was named Player of the Week after Tampa Bay defeated the Detroit Lions, 20-17.
This honor marks the third time in Sapp's career that he has received the player of the week award. He was named Defensive Player of the Week against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2 of 1999 and in Week 3 of 2000 for his outstanding performance against the Detroit Lions.
