Bucs Sign Jets Free Agent LG Kerry Jenkins

March 5 – Buccaneer Magazine has learned the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed their first free agent of the offseason by inking Jets free agent left guard Kerry Jenkins to a long-term contract. Jenkins will replace LG Randall McDaniel, who retired last week.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made their first big splash into the free agency pool on Tuesday by signing New York Jets free agent LG Kerry Jenkins to a long-term contract.

Jenkins, 28, played with the Jets the past five seasons and has started every game for three consecutive years.

Jenkins (6-5, 295) will be reunited with offensive line coach Bill Muir, who coached Jenkins in New York and was hired by Tampa Bay last month to coach in the same capacity with the Buccaneers.

Jenkins was an important piece of New York's solid offensive line. The Jets offensive line allowed starting QB Vinny Testaverde to be sacked a total of just 18 times last season. New York's offensive line also blocked in front of Pro Bowl RB Curtis Martin, who rushed for 1,513 (4.5 avg.) yards and 10 touchdowns last season. The Jets were ranked fourth in total rushing offense last season.

The addition of Jenkins might decrease the chances of Tampa Bay re-signing free agent C/G Todd Washington, who is scheduled to visit with the expansion Houston Texans this week.
