Gurley was a rookie out of Florida last season and had brief stints with Miami and Chicago in 2001. The young, athletic defensive tackle is a run-stopper in the mold of James Cannida, who is currently a free agent. Gurley was signed by Miami as an undrafted free agent in April, but was released by the Dolphins at the end of the preseason and then spent some time on the Chicago Bears' practice squad.
Gurley appeared in 39 games for the Gators, registering 20 starts. He notched 84 tackles and 2.5 sacks. With the addition of Gurley, the Bucs now have four defensive tackles on their roster, including Warren Sapp, Anthony McFarland and Chartric Darby.
Midget has been signed by the Bucs four times throughout his NFL career, most recently last November when he was a practice squad player for one week. He also spent the 2001 summer in Tampa Bay's training camp prior to his release in late August. Midget spent the entire 2000 season on Tampa Bay's practice squad after being released by Atlanta, who made him their fifth-round pick that spring.
