White Makes Special Impact

Dewayne White wins Special Teams Player of the Week

By Jeff Berlinicke

TAMPA – After a sophomore season in which he was a pleasant surprise to a defensive line that was depleted after the loss of Warren Sapp to free agency and the multiple injuries to Anthony McFarland, Dewayne White hasn't had the kind of year coach Jon Gruden hoped for.

The strides he made as his rookie year progressed weren't often seen earlier this season, but White made up for any lapse with a big game last weekend in the dramatic overtime win over Atlanta.

He was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week after blocking a potential game-winning field goal and salvaging the Bucs suddenly strong playoff hopes.

White also had three tackles and a sack of Atlanta quarterback Michael Vick in the win.

"I never played special teams until I got to the Bucs,'' White said. "For a defensive lineman who is one of the biggest guys out there, It's a big deal.''

The Bucs won the game on Matt Bryant's field goal with 15 seconds remaining in overtime.

XXX There were some Bucs who were upset that the Carolina Panthers have already started to sell merchandise for winning the South Conference championship. Actually, the Bucs can win it with a win over the Saints on Sunday. The Panthers are claiming it was all a misunderstanding.

XXX Bucs punter Josh Bidwell was missing from practice this week with good reason: His wife is due to give birth this week and it was decided to induce labor before the Bucs game on Sunday.
