Afternoon Blitz: Camp Thermometer 4.0

It's time to take the temperature at training camp. Who's driving up the mercury and who's watching their temperature cool down? Find out in the fourth edition of our camp feature, Training Camp Thermometer (and the last edition before Friday's preseason opener against New England):

Mercury rising

DE Greg White: Who? He's the sackmaster of Arena Football, as if you didn't know. The recently-signed end made a splash on Monday and became an immediate contender to make it through the first round of cuts.

DE Gaines Adams: The Bucs said they wouldn't move him around until he mastered the right end. So, on Monday, the Bucs moved him around in nickel packages. If you take the Bucs at their word (and who doesn't these days?), this is a good sign.

LS Andrew Economos: The best sound in the world if you're a long snapper? Silence. Nary a question about the transition from Dave Moore to Economos yet, and there won't be if Economos continues his exemplary work in training camp.

S Tanard Jackson: Each day, Jon Gruden seems to mention one, or both, of his rookie safeties. Jackson is making the transition from college cornerback to pro safety look pretty smooth. His coverage skills, honed at Syracuse, are an asset. Ask Joey Galloway, who couldn't shake Jackson on a deep route a few days ago.

Mother Nature: It doesn't rain? Fine. She makes it 103 degrees for Monday afternoon's workout. As if the stifling humidity isn't enough to fry your brain already.

Mercury falling

Cadillac Williams: Two straight days, two drops of catchable balls. What's this about being a complete back again? Right now, Michael Pittman is penciling in 50-60 catches.

Luke Petitgout: His second straight appearance. Now hearing that he'll miss the first preseason game, one must really become concerned about whether this strained back could be a season-long hassle.

Me: What happens when you miss the first two rounds of an off-line fantasy draft? Drew Brees and Maurice Jones-Drew. Now, I admit, it's my fault I wasn't on top of it, but the commissioner gave me Drew Brees over Tom Brady? In the first round? Are you kidding? FIX!

CB Torrie Cox: I hear nothing about him during camp. I can't remember if Gruden has fielded a specific question about him (I don't count it when, say someone asks Gruden about someone like Brian Kelly and he rambles about all three of his cornerbacks). It seems like every time I turn around he's being outclassed by a wide receiver. Forget his looming four-game suspension. If I were Cox, I'd be worried about making the first cut.

DT Ryan Sims: I may have been wrong when I said this guy would look at Tampa Bay as a second chance and bring the talent that made him a No. 6 overall pick. I think he may be losing the battle for a roster spot with rookie DE Greg Peterson. We'll see on Friday.
