Bucs beat Pats in preseason opener

Tampa Bay defeated New England, 13-10, on Friday night in the preseason opener for both teams.

Luke McCown threw the only touchdown pass of the game for Tampa Bay in a 13-10 victory over New England in the preseason opener for both teams on Friday night.

McCown, who had not taken a live game snap in two years, was a perfect 7-fot-7 for 68 yards, tossing a 12-yard touchdown pass to Paris Warren in the second quarter to give Tampa Bay a 10-3 lead.

Starting quarterback Jeff Garcia played just six plays, going 1-of-4 passing for 4 yards. Third-string quarterback Bruce Gradkowski was 6-of-11 for 50 yards.

Chris Simms, listed ahead of Gradkowski on the depth chart, did not play, as expected, due to his sore elbow.

Seventh-round pick Kenneth Darby had a big night, rushing for 84 yards on 15 carries, stealing the normal preseason thunder from Earnest Graham, who usually leads the Bucs in preseason rushing. He had just 35 yards. Cadillac Williams carried once for four yards.

Warren led all receivers with four catches for 46 yards.

Jovan Haye, the leading candidate to start at under tackle this season, led the Bucs with four tackles.
