Here is the transcript from Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden's morning press conference at training camp at Disney's Wide World of Sports on Sunday, Aug. 12, courtesy of the Buccaneers:
On RB Kenneth Darby
He made some really good runs. I thought he did a great a job running the football. He's got to continue to make real strides in other areas, but he ran the ball well and made some really magnificent runs. That's exactly what we saw at Alabama. He's running the ball well, he's getting better in all areas, but he still has a long way to go.
On if Darby's performance has created a battle with RB Earnest Graham
We've got a lot of battles going on. Special teams is going to have a big say in every matter, and [Darby] certainly is going to be in the mix.
On if Graham will be used as a fullback
Earnest [Graham] and Mike Pittman and a various casts of characters will perform that position.
On FB B.J. Askew
I was happy with B.J. Askew. I think he's a lively guy. He's athletic, being a former halfback at Michigan, and I thought he did some good things in the time that he played.
On LT Luke Petitgout's return to practice today
It's great to have him back. He feels good, and we appear to be on schedule for a good week of practice and hopefully we get him some work for Saturday night.
On the performance of QB Luke McCown Friday night
I was really pleased. He hadn't played in a long time. You've got to keep that in mind when you watch that performance. He did some good things with the ball. There were a couple of other occasions when he may have broken out a little bit soon. He needs some work in the pocket. I thought he made good decisions, moved our football team. He went seven-for-seven and put 10 points on the board. I was pleased with him; I really was. I thought he did some good things.
On LG Arron Sears
He didn't practice. He needs to lift weights, too, so he's in there lifting. We expect him to play and be back out on the field tomorrow."
He made a lot of plays in college. He blocked kicks. He's just got a knack for doing things like that. He made a couple of really good plays in pursuit, chasing down a screen. He's a very athletic guy. We know that. He tipped the ball, and he was a factor. You could see New England chipping him. They were going to some measures to try and make his life miserable, and I was pleased to see that they did that to make it hard on Gaines. He did do some good things. He's not a finished product – we'll continue to say that for a while – but he did give us great effort and he did make some plays for us."
