Jon Gruden Transcript: Aug. 15

Here is the transcript from Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden's morning press conference at training camp at Disney's Wide World of Sports on Wednesday, Aug. 15, courtesy of the Buccaneers

On moving practice inside in the morning

"Yes, we're going to practice outside later today. We've had two practices the last two days and the heat index has been well over 100 all four practices. I think it's the right thing to do. We've got a lot of plays done, a lot of situations looked at, some good film to study, so that was the plan today."

On WR Maurice Stovall's camp and how much he'll play against Jacksonville

"He's had a good camp. We're expecting him to become great; that's the goal. He's had a good camp and so have a lot of other guys. He's in a competitive situation. He's right in the mix. Obviously his size, his attributes, physically, are rare. He'll play; I don't know how much. I don't count plays. We've got a lot of guys to look at, but we'll try to get him in there early and often."

On his assessment of the three weeks of camp

"I think it's been really good. We have a lot of new faces. This is a totally different football team at every position on offense, on defense and in special teams. And we have a new quarterback here. It's clear as day that the offense is different. Maybe that didn't show up, I guess, [against] New England in the first six plays, but there's a good vibe I think around here in spite of some tough situations we've had to endure and overcome. I like the football team."

On if Simms is in jeopardy of not making the team

"There's jeopardy for everybody, coaches and players, if the performance level isn't good. I'm not going to stir headlines up here. He is a great kid and he has played a lot of football here. He had a serious injury. We're moving on right now with the preseason, and when Chris is ready to go you'll see him. Hopefully, [that's] a little bit Saturday night in Jacksonville, but right now as I said it's a work in progress. He's clearly behind but he could catch up."

On if he would like to see Kevin Carter settle in at left end

"Yes, I would. Everybody's talked about flexibility and versatility and all that. We want to see him center in and play a period of plays in succession at the left end position. That's what you'll see Saturday night a little bit. We will adjust quickly; he won't play all night. Here's a guy that can play any position on the defensive line and I think play it well, but we're going to try get him centered here a little bit and let him square away at left end."

On Governor Charlie Crist coming to practice

"It's great having him. I told him we had President [George] Bush here last year and we won four games. So give me something man, give me some good stuff brother. I'm a big fan of his. He's got a tough job. That's a tough job, making sure the state of Florida and the United States are in order. I admire these people tremendously for what they do. It was great to meet him personally today and have him around the guys. I was excited to meet him; it was neat."

On Crist predicting the Bucs would have a winning season

"Told you I liked that guy! I do. He's a good guy and he's done a heck of a job. I'm not as politically informed, maybe, as most people but I do pay attention to a lot of things that are close to home here. I'm a big fan of his. He's done a great, great job for us."

On injuries

"We have a few things, but nothing really serious. We've got some minor nicks. We had 18 or 19 men get IVed yesterday. That was the biggest thing. Let these guys replenish their fluids a little bit. Nothing serious to report today."

On if Luke Petitgout is going to play in Saturday's game

"Yes he will. At this point in time he will play, and that's encouraging. We're excited about it. We did tell you he was going to play and come back, and he did. Sometimes you've just got to wait a little bit longer than you'd like to, but Luke is feeling good and has looked good here in the last three days."

On players being sore

"I never know any pro football players who feel good [during the season]. Once training camp starts these guys never feel good until February, when it's all said and done. But if you have a mindset that this is just a Survivor contest heck, that's TV shows, you know what I mean? Everybody is on this football team and trying to improve it and try to get us back to the playoffs. We realize that guys are sore and tired a little bit, and that's why we've tried to adjust our practice format to accommodate everyone."

On if players are anxious to get home

"Yes. Everybody's ready to go. It's been a great situation but three weeks is a long time. People do have families and people do have outside interests other than playing pool in the hotel lobby. I think these guys are eager to get going. They paid a great price here; they practiced hard and they practiced together. It will be time well spent, I think, when it's all said and done."

On if he's happy with the way camp has gone

"I am happy. I try to say that every day. We have a lot to do, a lot to improve upon from last year. It's been good. It will be great if we win some games and improve upon the goals that we've set."
