Press Pass: Jeff Garcia

In this edition of "Press Pass," Buccaneers quarterback Jeff Garcia talks about red zone chances, whether Sunday's game is a must-win and the possible weaknesses he sees in a rattled New Orleans defense.

On the chances he gets more input on the plays in the red zone

I think Coach Gruden has a number of options, a number of opportunities that give us excellent looks, and excellent opportunities. As far as progressions are concerned and decision-making that is based upon me. There are times when we get into third-and-short that we need to find ways to convert those situations, because that is what carries on drives. That is what gives us opportunities to now get the ball into the end zone. That's players on the field finding a way to execute better. We are going to work on that this week and we are going to try and iron out those kinks this weekend.

On if Sunday's game is a must win

You can't look at it as a 16-game season, you have to go week-to-week and give your best every single week. This is an important week for us. It is not only a division game, but we do not want to be a 0-2 team, and still having to go play some really tough games. It doesn't matter record-wise in this league, everybody has a chance to win on any given weekend. So it is important that we really utilize this home field and the backing that we have from these fans, and go out there and play our hearts out and give everything that we have in order to find a way to win this football game.

On weaknesses he's seen from the Saints' defense

It's difficult to say. Indianapolis did a great job of executing their offense, but they're a high-powered offense with many weapons that have all been together for a good length of time. No team is really going to be able to compare to what they were able to do. I think we just have to go out and find ways to execute. We know their defense. This team has had to play their defense obviously twice a year for the past number of years – ever since they got into the same division. It's just a matter of going out and trying to find a way to execute.

On the Saints

They are just a good football team; not indicative of what happened to them last week against Indianapolis. I think we have to look at them as a playoff-caliber football team, a team that won the division last year. They're going to be explosive. They're going to be hungry to come back out and prove that they belong in the top echelon of teams. We have to be ready for that. Defensively, they have good players – a good defensive line, smart active linebackers and some pretty good cover guys in the backfield. It's just a matter of us going out and executing once again and trying to figure out a way to get the ball in the end zone.

On what would change if Cadillac Williams is out

Well, Michael Pittman has been here a number of years. He understands and knows how to run this offense from the tailback position. He's very explosive, he's a hard runner, creates out of the backfield, catching the ball out of the backfield. Earnest Graham is a guy who's done exceptionally well in the preseason and just needs opportunities on the field. It won't be a Cadillac if it's not that situation, but we have guys who can step in and are paid to play this game at a high level, and I think they can do a good job at it.

On if a change at running back would change the game plan

I don't think it changes the game plan. I think we still do the things that we always do and that we practiced doing throughout the week and we just keep chipping away in that sense.

On the importance of the first few games

It's very important to find a way to get off to a fast start. We need to play better for 60 minutes. I thought we did some good things on Sunday against Seattle in a very tough environment, but that doesn't ease the pain of losing. So we need to find a way to turn that around and find a way to be successful on offense. I felt our defense did a good job on Sunday. They gave us an opportunity to be in that football game and we just need to find ways to get the ball in the end zone. It's important that we get that going right now. There's no time to waste. There's no time to find a sense of getting on the same page with everybody. Everybody needs to be on the same page right now and we have to get it going this Sunday."
