Bucs Release DE Warner

The Buccaneers released defensive end Ron Warner on Monday. Warner had been on the team's reserve list, serving a four-game suspension set forth by the NFL Commissioner's office on September 1. The team never disclosed specifics on Warner's suspension.

Upon his return last Wednesday, Warner, who had an impressive training camp and recorded two sacks in preseason after posting a league-high six quarterback takedowns in NFL Europe this past summer, was given a one-week roster exemption, which allowed the Bucs to carry 54 players on its roster.

While Warner had an impressive outing during training camp and preseason, Bucs defensive ends Ellis Wyms and Corey Smith stepped up and played well in Warner's absence. Wyms has recorded two sacks and 10 tackles as a backup and he can also play defensive tackle. Smith has recorded one sack and one tackle this season. Both of those players' play along with his suspension evidently made Warner expendable.
