Bucs Gradebook

Quarterback: C. He threw for a lot of yards, sure. But that turnover was a fatal error, as Jon Gruden would say, and that costs him a letter grade, at least.

Running backs: A-. Earnest Graham touched the ball 32 times and gained 191 total yards. Tremendous production. Michael Bennett might have changed the game if he could have scored on that 18-yard run.

Wide receivers: B+. It was nice to see Maurice Stovall get involved. Ike Hilliard had another big day. Joey Galloway could have been used more downfield, but the Lions were sitting on those routes. Earnest Graham caught 13 passes.

Offensive line: B-. Their run blocking was splendid. Their pass blocking was pretty suspect. They had difficulty with Shaun Rogers. Dewayne White had three sacks. Jeff Garcia was on his heels a lot on Sunday.

Defensive line: C+. The pressure on Jon Kitna was all right. But Kitna looked comfortable most of the day. The run defense was solid, but not spectacular. The overall play could have been better. They missed Patrick Chukwurah.

Linebackers: C. For the first time this season, this group didn't make any big plays. Derrick Brooks had a solid day. Barrett Ruud disappeared for stretches. Cato June had just one tackle. That can't happen for this defense to be successful.

Secondary: B. They didn't give up any big plays, but they didn't make any either. Still, give them credit for handling one of the league's best passing games without Brian Kelly or a steady pass rush.

Special teams: C. A blocked punt means a drop in letter grade. The loss of Mark Jones hurt both return units. The Bucs recovered one onside kick, but they needed another. Matt Bryant missed a field goal. Maybe it should be a D.

Overall grade: C+. The Bucs had more than 400 yards in total offense and dominated time of possession, but only scored 16 points. The reason? Two Buccaneers turnovers and bad miscues. The Bucs had three possessions that went for 10 plays or more. Two ended without points. This offense isn't explosive enough to absorb those sorts of mistakes and expect to win.
