Tampa Bay Extends Kiffin's Contract

October 18 – Tampa Bay's defense is ranked No. 1 in the National Football League and the Buccaneers rewarded the genius behind its defense's success by giving defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin a two-year contract extension Friday. Kiffin will remain with the Bucs through the 2004 season.

Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin is the brains behind the National Football League's top-rated defense and the team rewarded the defensive guru Friday with a two-year contract extension.

"Monte is one of the best defensive coordinators in the league," said Buccaneers general manager Rich McKay. "The continuity of the coaching staff is a priority of this organization and extending Monte is a part of that continuing plan."

Kiffin has been with the Bucs since 1996 and his defenses have finished in the top 10 in overall defense for five consecutive seasons and his unit is currently ranked No. 1 in overall defense (2nd against the run, 4th against the pass).

Tampa Bay head coach Jon Gruden was pleased to learn Kiffin would be on his coaching staff through the 2004 season.

"Keeping Monte Kiffin was the number one priority when I got the job and has remained a priority," said Gruden. "I think a great deal of Monte and it will always be a priority to keep him on my staff as long as I am in Tampa."
