NFL To Hold Meeting On Possible Compensation

December 31 – The NFL will hold a meeting this week to determine whether or not the league will recognize the four-year contract Bill Parcells signed with the Tampa Bay last January. The Bucs are seeking compensation in the form of a draft pick(s) from the Dallas Cowboys or any other team that extends a contract offer to Parcells.

Tampa Bay might be the only thing standing in the way of Bill Parcells' return to the sideline as a NFL head coach next season.

Last week, the Bucs informed Parcells' agent, Jimmy Sexton, that talks with Dallas or any other NFL team are in violation of the NFL's tampering rules since Tampa Bay claims Parcells signed a four-year contract with the Bucs last January before he changed his mind and decided to stay retired.

Dallas fired head coach Dave Campo Monday, which cleared the way to hire Parcells, but the NFL will hold a meeting this week to determine whether or not the league will recognize the four-year contract.

Tampa Bay's claim may or may not be deemed a valid one by the league. The Bucs never actually submitted the contract to the league office. But if the Bucs' claim is considered valid by the league, Dallas will likely have to surrender one or more draft picks to the Buccaneers in exchange for Parcells' services.

The Bucs surrendered two first-round draft picks and two second-round draft picks along with $8 million to the Oakland Raiders last February in exchange for head coach Jon Gruden.

"I have no comment on that, other than the NFL has governing rules on how coaches and players get from team to team," Gruden said Monday. "I don't know a lot about compensation. I can't hold that conversation. But I know the NFL will do what is appropriate in this situation and I know that it won't distract what we are doing. I'm not going to get caught up with another coach on another team. I am going to concentrate on our team today and this thing will take care of itself."
