The latest rumor floating around One Buc Place concerns the quarterback competition and who exactly is the odd man out.
Head coach Raheem Morris announced earlier in training camp that the team expects to keep only three quarterbacks, leaving one player without a job. Many assumed that second year quarterback Josh Johnson would be the one that would be cut especially since the team used a first-round pick on QB Josh Freeman in this year's draft.
NFL Network's Jason La Confora does not believe that will be the case. He writes that Luke McCown, not Josh Johnson, could be the one in danger of losing his roster spot if he is not able to secure the starting quarterback position.
McCown was just given a $2.5 million signing bonus by the team this past offseason, but that does not guarantee him a spot on the team. Leftwich was not given a signing bonus when he reached an agreement with the team.
Morris cannot afford to wait until later in the preseason to name his starting quarterback, and this is something he is well aware of.
"We've got to make it right now." Morris said after Monday's practice. "The third preseason game is when you go out there and you go through a game plan. I just think you have to make a decision about the leader of your football team at that point."
Even though the team has only played in one preseason game, Leftwich appears to be the frontrunner for the job, which leaves many questioning the point of keeping McCown on the roster as a backup.
The wildcard though is Johnson who has had an excellent camp and appears to be excelling in new offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski's system. It is also rumored that Johnson has outperformed the other quarterbacks in the classroom.
