At least Dominik is trying

The Bruce Allen-Jon Gruden Bucs were not aggressive when it came to trades or free agency, in my opinion. Some of that was based on their salary cap restrictions. But even after those restrictions were gone, they really didn't make a splash.
Well, say this for second-year GM Mark Dominik – he's at least trying to make some major moves. First, there was last year's trade for TE Kellen Winslow, a trade that in the first year appears to be a solid one. Now, there's the story our Chris Steuber reported last week that the Bucs are exploring a potential trade with the Rams that might allow them to move up in the draft.
It is one thing to move up from the last part of the first round and get a higher pick. That's actually not that hard. But moving up from the No. 3 spot to the No. 1 spot? Now that takes some creative thinking, and judging by the parameters of the rumored deal, this one gets high marks for creativity. It also makes it clear to me that the Bucs are set on taking a defensive tackle in the first round. It's either going to be Ndamukong Suh from Nebraska or Gerald McCoy from Oklahoma. Suh is the more dominant player, and to me, he's worth trading up for. It's amazing that one of the pivotal players in this deal is QB Josh Johnson. Apparently the Rams are really high on him, but he's certainly an unfinished product.

Now, plenty can happen between now and the draft. But give Dominik this – he knows his team needs to improve and he appears to be pursuing every possible angle to make that happen. At the least, it should be an interesting NFL Scouting Combine this week.
Our Free Agent Focus Begins
Tuesday, 12:15 p.m.
For the next several days, Scout.com and Bucsblitz.com experts will debate free agent issues surrounding the Buccaneers. Today, Adam Caplan and Matthew Postins discuss the team's hottest commodity, LB Barrett Ruud, and whether he'll be able to tackle free agency. Plus, find out why the Bucs blew the chance to build their defense around Ruud.
We'll be examining several other free agency issues with Caplan, who is our senior NFL writer and keeps up with all league issues, including the collective bargaining agreement, which will significantly change the NFL landscape in March, and in future, once both sides come to an agreement.
