Bucs Release Six Players

The Buccaneers said goodbye to six players on Monday including Chris Hovan, Arron Sears and B.J. Askew. Team also announces the signings of 12 college free agents who were not drafted over the weekend. Read on to find out more.

The Buccaneers announced today that they have released FB B.J. Askew, DT Chris Hovan, G Shawn Murphy, P Sam Paulescu, G Arron Sears, and CB Stoney Woodson.

Hovan started all 16 games last season for the Buccaneers recording 57 tackles, one TFL, 0.5 sacks and one forced fumble. He started 79-of-80 games for the Buccaneers since joining the team in 2005. He led all Tampa Bay defensive linemen in tackles in 2005, 2006 and 2008 and ranked second on the line in 2007 and 2009, recording a career-high 95 tackles in 2007.

Askew was with the team for three seasons (2007-09) playing in 28 games with 15 starts. Last season he played in five of the first six games for Tampa Bay before being placed on the Non-Football Injury List on October 20.

Sears started all 31 games he played in for the Buccaneers since being drafted in 2007 but spent the 2009 season on the Non-Football Illness List.

Paulescu joined the team on December 1, 2009 punting in five games for Tampa Bay. Many thought he may be safe after Josh Bidwell was let go. When the team drafted Brent Bowden in the sixth round, Paulescu's fate was sealed.

Murphy joined the Buccaneers on October 21, 2009 after being claimed off waivers from the Miami Dolphins and Woodson spent a portion of the 2009 season on the team's practice squad after being signed on December 10.

Also on Monday, the Buccaneers announced that they have signed 12 college free agents who did not hear their names called during the NFL Draft.

The most recognizable names who agreed to terms with the team are Tennessee LB Rico McCoy, Mississippi QB Jevan Snead and North Alabama and former Florida State WR Preston Parker.

Snead was considered by many to be the top player available of the undrafted free agents after skipping his senior season at Ole Miss to enter the NFL Draft. His choice to leave after his junior year was quite a shocker after throwing 20 TDs and leading the SEC with 20 Interceptions compared to throwing 26 TDs and 13 Interceptions the year before. His QB rating in the two years fell from 94.1 to 73.9.

Florida State fans will especially recognize the name Preston Parker since the playmaker spent three seasons in Tallahassee prior to being kicked off the team after an incident at a fast food drive-thru in February of 2009. At Florida State, Parker registered 102 catches for 1163 yards and five touchdowns in two seasons.
