"Brandon McDonald emerged quickly his rookie year after being drafted in the fifth round by the Browns, who were desperate at the cornerback position after the loss of Gary Baxter to a career-ending patella tear. Once given the opportunity, McDonald showed good ball instincts by ripping down several interceptions when inserted in as a nickel back, and was elevated to a starting role in 2008. Unfortunately, McDonald was not able to hold onto the role, and found himself benched at several points because of his performance in 2008 and 2009. McDonald's off-field judgement is also sometimes questionable, as indicated by an obscene tweet aimed at Terrell Owens which got local headlines earlier this year.
Like the Cardinal's other ex-Brown acquisition this off-season, Derek Anderson, McDonald displayed coach-endangering inconsistency in Cleveland, looking like an All-Pro one game and being a coverage liability the next. With respect to the 2010 pre-season, McDonald made some timely plays in pre-season and seemed likely to make the team despite the off-season acquisition of CB Sheldon Brown and team's decision to spend a first-round pick on Joe Haden.
The Browns decided to keep special teams standout Mike Adams instead, and today have reportedly added CB Quincy Butler, who also is a strong special teams contributor. Beyond the special teams contributions of the two backups left on the Cleveland roster, sources inside the organization tell the OBR that they were looking for a more physical presence in the defensive backfield, and that McDonald's film just didn't show him as being the physical player they wanted. "
In addition to Maui'a, LB Pago Togafau and CB Marshay Green have been released. Togafua not so surprising but Green - who's had a solid camp and preseason - came fairly unexpected. Especially since CB A.J. Jefferson remains. Maybe Jefferson will stick around after all.
FB Jerome Johnson is the only other signing to report. Formerly of the New York Giants.
