The Cardinals don't appear close to making a quarterback change, but coach Ken Whisenhunt acknowledged Monday that Derek Anderson needs to play better.
Anderson has struggled with accuracy in his first three games, and he's missing receivers for big plays, most notably Larry Fitzgerald.
In each game, Fitzgerald has been open for potential large gains, but Anderson's lack of touch has caused incompletions.
Last Sunday, for instance, the Cardinals had Fitzgerald matched up against linebacker Kamerion Wimbley for a big gain. Instead of lofting the ball over Wimbley's head and into Fitzgerald's hands, Anderson threw it too hard and Fitzgerald couldn't catch it.
"I think he played a little better in the second half for us," Whisenhunt said. "There were some things he missed in the first half that we got to improve on. We can't miss those plays. But the thing I like about Derek is he seems to make plays, especially later in the game, that are big plays for us. The thing we've got to do is get more consistent play out of Derek."
Anderson has been tough on himself after every game. The return of running back Beanie Wells could help the quarterback, because a stronger running game opens up the play-action threat for Anderson.
The Cardinals also are likely to start using Anderson on more rollouts to get him away from pressure.
